Michael Howell - Participant
Dr. Howell is Chief Clinical Strategist and Principal Scientist at Google Health, where he focuses on how technology like machine learning can help improve real-world healthcare. He was previously Chief Quality Officer at the University of Chicago Medicine, where he was the senior physician responsible for overseeing the quality of care at the health system. Before that, he served at Harvard Medical School and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he held a variety of roles focused on quality, patient safety, and healthcare delivery science, and novel uses of electronically derived healthcare data.
An active investigator, Michael has published more than 100 research articles, editorials, and book chapters. These studies have held an interest for the public and have been covered by CNN, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Consumer Reports, among others.
A nationally recognized expert on patient safety and quality, Dr. Howell has also served on national advisory and guideline panels for the CDC, Medicare, the National Academy of Medicine, and national professional associations. His forthcoming book, Understanding Healthcare Delivery Science, focuses on the intersection of real-world improvement and research-quality methods in the complex environment of healthcare. Michael is a Fellow of the second class of the Health Innovators Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
