Sara Jones - Participant

Sara Jones is the Director of County Library Services for the Marin County Free Library system. She joined Marin County in July of 2013.  Her focus has been in making the library a critical resource to improve student achievement in underserved communities in Marin County. Currently she is collaborating on a project to deploy education and immersive learning environments using virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (VAR) and extended reality in libraries. The next steps in the collaboration is a national conference on VR/AR/XR planned for 2019 or early 2020.

Sara has 25 years’ experience administering libraries, including the Carson City Library where she brought innovation and a focus on education and the library’s role in student achievement. She was Nevada’s State Librarian and Administrator of the Nevada State Library and Archives from 2001-2007, serving on several regional and national committees. Sara has taught in two library schools, the University of North Texas and San Jose State University, focusing on public library management and fiscal resource management and has been very active throughout her career in professional library associations serving as delegate to the ALA (American Library Association) from Nevada, President of the Nevada Library Association. Sara was named the Nevada Library Association’s Librarian of the Year in 2012 and received the Peggy Sullivan Award from the ALA in 2018 for her dedication and support of children’s and youth services.

Sara has post master’s degree work from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas; a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts in Interpersonal Communications from Boise State University. She is currently the President of CALIFA, nonprofit library membership consortium representing 230 libraries in California and leading regional and national library grant projects and services.
