Richard Green - Participant

Dr. Richard Green is the Director for the Liberty Global Corporation and the former President and CEO of CableLabs. In that position, he headed the research and development organization responsible for charting the cable television industry’s course in technology. Dr. Green served in this role for 20 years as the first CEO of the labs. During his tenure CableLabs successfully helped the cable industry enter a new era of standards based new businesses including the cable industry's data service (DOCSIS), VOIP, HDTV, fiber infrastructure and digital television.

Before joining CableLabs, Dr. Green served as an executive for three television networks, ABC, CBS and PBS.  He was the Director of the CBS Advanced TV Technology Laboratory and served as Chief Technical Officer for PBS.  Prior to his television career he joined the faculty of the University of Washington as an Assistant Professor.  During his residency in Seattle he also served as a senior member of the technical staff of the Geo-Astrophysics Laboratory, a component of the Boeing Scientific Research Laboratory.

Dr. Green has been actively involved in forming and participating in standards-setting organizations for the telecommunication industries. He helped organize and establish the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) in the U.S. He has also chaired numerous Committees in the International Communication Union (ITU) including the group that developed Recommendation 601, a world- wide television standard for digital signals. He is the former chairman of SG9, an ITU-T committee which developed the worldwide standards for broadband and VOIP services.

 Dr. Green is currently a Director of Liberty Global Corporation and Shaw Communications Inc. He is a Senior Fellow of the Silicon Flatirons Center at the University of Colorado.  He is a recipient of several prestigious awards.  The most recent is an Emmy awarded in 2012 by the National Academy of Television Art and Sciences citing lifetime achievement for development of television technology. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, an M.S. in Physics from the State University of New York in Albany, as well as a B.S. in Physics from Colorado College. Green is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
