Developing Goals and Metrics for the Good Society - Agenda

Tuesday, February 12, 2019

8:45 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.            Session I. Developing a moonshot vision for the future of AI
Participants will describe their moonshot visions for the use of AI for positive good in society. What are the fears arising from these moonshots?

10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.           Session II. A framework of tensions
From the first session, the group will consider the tension of societal values as set out in the background readings (O’Toole). How do these values manifest themselves in current discussions about the role of AI in our society? How might AI be employed to develop a more robust society in each of the value areas? Building from this framework, the group will begin to discuss the challenges ahead in three areas of inquiry—employment, healthcare and governance.

1:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.              Session III. Future Planning (Working Groups)
Participants will break into three working groups to construct a future scenario within each of the three subject areas: employment, healthcare and governance. In developing their scenarios, each group will draw from the tension framework and explore values inherent in their particular subject area. What are the tensions of values in this subject area posed by the advent of AI in the field. (E.g., in employment, the tension between efficiency, on the one hand, and community or equality, on the other.)

What are the signposts that the technology is developing in one way or the other? What do developers need to do to move in more positive directions? Can a democratic society use AI to get more of each of the values without diminishing the others? What are the metrics to evaluate progress?

3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.              Session IV. Working Groups Reports
Groups will return and share their scenarios and conclusions with the rest of the participants.

8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.           Session V. Metrics and Movement
Drawing from the scenarios presented in Session IV, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the constructed futures and potential roadmaps. Are there common signposts or measurements for all that give direction to developers or marketers of AI? This session is an opportunity to reflect on current discussions and signposts that may preserve and or endanger the group’s vision.

10:20 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.          Session VI. Leading to a Purposeful Future
If a purposeful future will involve recognizing and understanding key signals and metrics, then who leads this movement forward? What should be the respective roles of government, business leaders, civil society, and individuals? Simply, who should do what to move towards the goals of a good life in a good society?
